For myself, I like to make portable apps that I can put on a flash drive that streamline technical troubleshooting. Portable apps by definition defy best-practices and you should never ever ever make them.įirst, we should consider why a portable app may be better a non-portable one. Security-wise, you don't want people making portable programs that can run without an installer and putting them in the startup folder of every Windows PC they can find. You don't want people copying your program and installing it on every PC they can find without paying you for it. Programs shouldn't be portable, especially if you are charging for them. In most cases, this is exactly what you want. If you follow most best-practices, your program will be deployed with an installer, which creates start-menu entries, registry entries, and a whole lot of other things that make your program run well and secure, but thoroughly restrict portability.
